Morton’s neuroma (Interdigital neuritis)

This is a common cause of pain in the ball of the foot and occurs when a nerve becomes compressed between the metatarsal heads.

In the early stages, this will cause the nerve to become inflammed, but if left, a swelling on the nerve may occur.

Treatment in the first instance includes padding or insoles to alleviate the pressure on the nerve. Steroid injections are helpful for reducing the inflammation and relieving symptoms. In extreme cases, surgery may be necessary.
