Assessment and Treatments

Sever’s disease (Calcaneal apophysitis)

Repetitive stress to the heel causes inflammation of the growth plate in the heel bone (calcaneus). The pain will usually go away in a few months as the growth plate ossifies.

Meanwhile, rest, pain relief with ice packs and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories are helpful. Insoles, heel lifts or orthoses will take the tension from the Achilles tendon and reduce the stress on the area. Low level laser therapy may reduce the inflammation.
