Paronychia
Paronychia is an infection or inflammation of the skin around the nail, typically caused by bacteria or fungi entering through a small break in the skin. It may develop suddenly (acute) or persist over time (chronic), often resulting in redness, swelling, tenderness and, in some cases, pus.
If left untreated, paronychia can become painful and may lead to further complications. At Dulwich Podiatry, we assess the severity of the condition and provide effective treatment to relieve discomfort and restore healthy nail growth.
How we can help
At Dulwich Podiatry, we provide tailored treatment to manage paronychia and prevent it from recurring. We begin with a full assessment to determine whether the condition is acute or chronic, and to identify any underlying causes.
For mild cases, we may recommend warm saline soaks and topical treatments to reduce infection and inflammation. If the area is more severely affected, we can carry out a simple, sterile procedure to drain any abscess and relieve pressure. Medication may also be prescribed where appropriate.
For chronic paronychia, we focus on long-term management. This includes advice on nail care, reducing exposure to moisture or irritants, and protecting the area with suitable footwear where needed.
