Chilblains
Chilblains, also known as perniosis, are a common cold-weather condition that affects the skin’s small blood vessels. They are triggered by exposure to cold, damp conditions and typically appear within 12 to 24 hours. Affected areas often include the toes, fingers, ears and nose.
Symptoms can include painful, swollen or itchy patches that may appear red, purple or blue. In more severe cases, broken skin or ulceration can occur. If left untreated, chilblains can become increasingly uncomfortable and may lead to infection.
At Dulwich Podiatry, we assess the severity of your chilblains and offer practical guidance to reduce discomfort and help prevent recurrence. This includes advice on footwear, skin care, and protective measures to minimise cold exposure and maintain healthy circulation.
How we can help
We provide professional care for patients affected by chilblains, whether you are dealing with a one-off episode or recurring symptoms. We can identify whether the condition is primary or linked to another issue, and offer treatment to manage any complications, such as broken skin.
Our team will also offer advice on insulation, moisture management and footwear to help reduce future flare-ups. If needed, we can apply dressings to support healing and prevent infection.
