Bunions

A bunion, also known as “hallux valgus” forms as the big toe moves out of position, creating a prominent painful big toe joint. The misalignment of the big toe can also impact on the smaller toes on the foot, causing hammering or clawing.

The formation of a bunion is often due to a number of factors including foot structure, stresses on the foot and footwear.

How we can help

During your assessment, we will look at the likely cause of your bunion and address any underlying biomechanical factors, using exercise, orthoses or night splints. If the joint is painful, we may suggest a steroid injection or hyaluronic acid (Ostenil®) to reduce the inflammation.  Although bunion deformity can only be reversed with surgery, these conservative measures will often help with pain and slowing down the bunion formation.
