Men’s Health Month: Common Foot Issues

June marks Men’s Health Month, a time to raise awareness about the health challenges men face and encourage them to take action. At Dulwich Podiatry we see many male patients who only book their appointment once the discomfort becomes unbearable or, more often, after a gentle nudge from a partner, daughter or close friend!
The truth is, foot and lower limb issues can have a huge impact on daily life, especially for active men or those in physically demanding jobs. Whether you’re running marathons, playing five-a-side, or just trying to stay mobile in your later years, your feet do a lot of work. That’s why they deserve some attention this Men’s Health Month.
Common Foot Conditions We See in Men
- Plantar Fasciitis
This is one of the leading causes of heel pain, particularly in men who run or spend long hours on their feet. It is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia (a thick band of tissue along the sole) and can feel like a sharp, stabbing pain when you first get up in the morning. - Achilles Tendinopathy
We see many men, especially those who enjoy high-impact sports or gym workouts, come in with pain or stiffness at the back of the ankle. Often, this is due to overuse or tight calf muscles. Left untreated, it can become a long-term issue. - Runner’s Knee & Biomechanical Issues
Foot misalignment, such as flat feet or overpronation, can cause strain all the way up to the knees, hips and lower back. This is especially common in male runners or those who have increased their activity levels too quickly. - Fungal Infections
Fungal nail infections and athlete’s foot are common in men, particularly those who frequent communal showers or wear non-breathable shoes. These issues may seem minor, but they can worsen if left untreated. - Ingrowing Toenails
Ingrowing toenails are another common complaint among men, particularly those who wear tight-fitting shoes, play contact sports, or attempt a bit of DIY toenail treatment when the nails get sore. When the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, it can cause pain, swelling and sometimes infection. Many men put off getting it treated, opting instead to “sort it out at home” but this often makes things worse. At Dulwich Podiatry, we offer both conservative care and, if needed, minor nail surgery to resolve the issue quickly and comfortably.
When Mobility Starts to Matter More
As we get older, it’s easy to overlook the importance of foot health, especially if issues develop slowly over time. Many of our male patients in their later years come to us with long-standing conditions such as thickened toenails, persistent corns, or reduced sensation in the feet. These problems might seem minor at first, but they can gradually affect balance, increase the risk of falls and limit independence. Routine podiatry care can make a real difference in staying active, comfortable and confident on your feet.
